I was born with a Caribbean soul and live with a continual longing to be oceanside! One of the glorious things about the beaches are the amazing tropical beauties. Both my trips to the beach in May and June were canceled due to Mom's health issues -- but not far from the hospital was this gorgeous floral display. One day, I got a chance to leave the hospital for a few hours and I stopped by to soak in the beauty. They sure beat the dull gray, heavy-atmosphere of the hospital any day!

Amazing what a few minutes of spent in nature's beauty can do to lift one's spirits! Enjoy!

Life Comes at Us Fast!

Life as a way of intimating art and this week, I am reminded of the commercial slogan "Life comes at us fast!"

We get so busy with our plans, and Life simply rushes past us at an amazing speed. Then one day, BAM! Everything comes to a swift halt while a detour reroutes our attention and actions.

I'm experiencing one of those weeks. We were floored to find out this week that Mom needs open heart surgery (triple bypass at minimum, possibly a quintuple). Especially since the nuclear stress tests she had to approve her for surgeries in '06 and '07 gave her a very healthy report and she went through two major surgeries! Her cardiac physician explained this did NOT happen overnight. Since we lost Dad in '86 WHEN he had his heart attack, we were blessed to discover her condition prior to an attack.

The cardiac surgeon met with me Monday; Mom is at a higher risk of having complications with her kidneys post surgery and possibly having a stroke during/after surgery. She is in good spirits, her faith is strong, and many are praying for her and the surgical/ICU/nursing staffs who will care for her. If you feel moved to include her in your prayers, we would appreciate that.

This week has been a bit tough, having to halt some pretty big plans, and simply choose to make family my priority while I watch a couple of dreams slip by -- but I always seek the silver lining in the dark cloud and this is what God has shown me so far:

- It's better to learn this way than the alternative.

- God's plans are not our own. But we can trust that His plans are infinitely better than our own.

- Let this be a wake-up call to refocus attention on my own health as I'm a firm believer in what we do today impacts the quality of life we'll experience later.

- People care and are willing to pray-- we have so many friends and family members lifting prayers for us and extending the prayer network by taking the prayer needs to their respective prayer groups . Wow! That's a lot of prayers.

We leave for surgery in just about 2 hours as we must check in by 5:15am; surgery starts at 7:00am and will last several hours before they take her to ICU. I plan to perfect the art of sleeping in an uncomfortable chair in a public space, resting in complete trust that God Himself will be guiding the surgeon's hands in caring for my Mom.

Tuesday Blooms ~ Sentimental Blue

It's always exciting to see a perennial return, especially one that was new last year! Today was the first day for our Platycodon Grandiflora to display her glory; she is also known as Balloon Flower and her color is Sentimental Blue. Our three Balloon flowers are full of blooms, so more beauty awaits!

Gardening is such an interesting sport -- tending, fertilizing, working to keep the critters (bad bugs, rabbits, squirrels, and birds!) at bay, and checking morning and afternoon to discover new changes. It's funny how it brings out a nurturing side; and like any proud Mom, I'm posting the following photos to show-off our newest babies!

Recently as I was tending my flower gardens, I found myself studying the intricate details of the flowers. I was awe-struck by the detail: the soft delicate, almost velvety touch of some blooms, the color and texture changes of their seed heads, the way the stems attach to the bloom. Have you ever taken a few moments to really look at the intricate beauty of a flower? It's really quite amazing as they are are so incredibly created, and like a snowflake, I've yet to see two identical flowers!

And as I studied the flowers and plants, I saw a correlation in how they are dressed in glory to provide such a gala event in my landscape and the same attention to detail in costume and set design of a stage performance. So, I went backstage to snap a few shots of my flowers as they performed their own brand of symphony. I hope you enjoy this special and unique performance!

With Mother's Day just days away, this week's Tuesday Blooms is dedicated to Mom's everywhere! When we think of Mom's we generally think of "love" -- and no better flower bloom to visually portray love than a rose!

This rose beauty seems to soak in the sun's warm rays and reflect them back out.

I love the color and size of this rose (compare the bloom to the size of my hand!); she is layers of delicate beauty! (Traces of the recent hail storm damage can be seen on the wooden fence behind this rose.)

I love this time of year when the sun sets late in the evening; this part of the yard receives the afternoon and evening sun and I like the way that is captured with the light and shadows in this shot.

I love the symphony of this bed, such color and movement, and the fragrant flowers draw the bees and butterflies -- it's quite a beautiful stage for non-stop enjoyment!

In less than a week, the garden has really taken off. The following items planted from seed on Sunday, April 20, have already broken ground: pumpkins, cucumbers, radishes, and green beans!

When planting from seed, it's important to transplant the baby seedlings in order to grow a healthy size veggie; failure to do so will result in stunted growth! The photos snapped below were taken before we got our hands dirty with the transplanting!

Since we created a raised bed planter, we added steps from one course of cinder blocks, filling the cores of each with dirt topped off by gravel. For decorative ambience, we added to stained glass stepping stones with garden themes that we had. Since the space leading into the garden was very small, we removed the grass adding in the pea gravel -- don't you just love to hear the crunch of pea gravel when you walk on it!

Pretty in Pink: Scenes from my very own Landscape Bliss™

As I walked around enjoying the beauty of our blooming landscape today, I noticed a recurring, unintentional theme of pink. I decided to photograph a few to highlight the beauty and variety of pink at our place. It was fun, so I think I will dedicate more days to "the color" in my landscape!

In Bloom This Week!

The pansies are still beautifully in bloom. I love looking closely at the gorgeous design of God's creation, the texture and colors are simply amazing.

The roses have begun to bloom, but they are about to burst forth in full glory.

I can't seem to capture the true color or size of the roses in these photos. The red roses are quite fragrant and they are huge in size!

Gerber Daisies and Purple Queen provide a decorative accent to this tree ring out back!

The Making of a Home Garden

For our veggie garden, we chose to use a side yard that receives little traffic and 8-10 hours of sunlight.

We dug up the yard one shovel at a time to remove the grass. It was quite a workout and took a couple of days; our black gumbo soil is akin to hardened concrete!

Not shown, we brought in a tiller and added mushroom composts and leaves saved from last fall.

After weighing the options of various garden restraint materials, we chose to build ours out of concrete cinder blocks. We partially buried the first course, using a tamp to level the ground.

To add stabilization for soil shifting, we drove stakes into the ground; the stakes are shown here placed, but not yet driven into the ground.

Our garden is just over 100sf, so we brought in six yards of soil enriched for vegetable gardens; compare this new soil to the amended soil above -- not much comparison! Maggie kept watch over the soil while we worked!

Dave and I drew up a plan for placing each veggie group; when it came time to plant, he dug all his holes first, then planted and I started by placing my plants and then digging each hole. Both methods worked fine, I just thought the contrast in style was fun and picture-worthy to note ... :-)

I loved the peat pot containers these veggies came in; simply cut the bottom off and plant without the added waste of a plastic container. Tomato plants should be planted with soil covering about 80% of the plant to help them establish a strong root system.

After planting seeds and plants, we gave each a good drink of water with fertilizer, then gave them a final drink We added the marigolds to help ward off pests (like Nematodes and Whiteflies) and the petunias, lantana, and purple queen for their pollination attributes.

We still have a few tweaks to complete the garden -- more to come!

Spring Awakens at our Place!

We worked hard this past weekend creating a raised bed veggie garden from a part of our yard that was formerly a basically unused grassed side yard. I'll share more about that project in a future blog.

But wow!
Being outdoors after such a stormy week was just awesome! And it was exciting to see how Spring is awakening all around our home. Here are a few photos of what we have going on at our place!

The rose bushes are heavy with blooms, but this is the first one to appear in all her glory!

I love Gerber Daisies because they are so easy to grow, deliver such flowering beauty, and are perennials, which is great for building a great landscape design on a budget! We have them
planted in several beds throughout our property and they bloom almost year around here in Zone 8.

While I was looking through the camera viewfinder to get my Gerber Daisy shot, I was awed when a butterfly landed right in front of me and began sampling the delicacy of the Pincushion flower next to the Daisy! I also have added a lot of the Pincushion flowers to our landscape as they do indeed attract butterflies!

I enjoy Hawthorn shrubs year around, but in the Springtime, they add incredible beauty and drive-up appeal to our home's entryway!

I'm adding a new perennial, Kalanchoe , this year. I don't have any experience with this flower, so it's fun to try out something new!

Reflecting on the old and the new...

Reflecting back on 2007 and looking towards what lies ahead in 2008, I am reminded of Job 1:21 "The Lord gave and the Lord has taken away; may the name of the Lord be praised." (NIV)

What did 2007 bring to your life? Mine was joy and sorrow; I had the joy of marrying and less than 2 weeks later I buried a dear friend (she was the fourth treasured, lifelong friend I buried in a year). Peaks and valleys, this Christian life we live. I continue to be reminded that true growth occurs in the valley, not in the mountaintop experiences. Whereever you are today, draw near to God, trusting Him when nothing makes sense and praising Him for who He is regardless of circumstances!

The following video illustrates this message in a beautiful way. It is the love story of parents' love for their son and the miraculous work God did through a young infant boy. Through their story, the Mooney's remind us to trust God and not blame Him for difficult times.

Interesting that the Interviewer felt the need to grill Presidential Candidate Mike Huckabee On His Beliefs on Evolution.

The line of questioning in a Presidential Debate and and Huckabee's response reminds me of 2 Timothy 4:1-3 ...

"In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction. For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear." (NIV)

I'm not fond of a lot of constitutional amendment changes, but maybe we should consider adding, "You can't complain if you don't vote."

Chuck Norris Backs Huckabee

From the Newsweek article:
"Here's a Chuck Norris fact you may not know. If Chuck Norris endorses you and appears in one of your campaign's TV ads, you take the lead in an Iowa poll and your Web server crashes. That's what happened to Mike Huckabee, the shrewder-than-you-realize former Arkansas governor (sound familiar?) who has become a major player in the tight Republican presidential race. The ad opens with Huckabee deadpanning: "My plan to secure the border? Two words: Chuck Norris." The camera moves back to reveal the Man Himself, who praises Huckabee as a solid, gun-loving, IRS-loathing conservative. Huckabee adds a twist at the end. "I approved this message ... So did Chuck." The ad, which ran in Iowa on cable for a week, has generated an astonishing 1.5 million YouTube views and clogged the campaign's Web site. Huckabee was rising in Iowa even before the ad, but he took the lead with Chuck as Huckster."

The commercial, a bit cheeky, but at least it's not the typical mud-slinging campaign!

Happy Birthday Maggie!

Today's Maggie Mae's birthday! What a great little dog she has been these past 15 years. We've been through so much together. She kept me from stepping on 4 water moccasins (4 separate occasions) that found their way onto our patio when we lived on the lake, has given her opinion on more than one guy I dated, she's provided an endless source of entertainment. She developed epilepsy at 4.5 years, had a ruptured neck disc at 6, at 13 developed a thyroid condition, and at 14 began kidney failure. Through it all, she remains a faithful, loving companion.

Happy Birthday Maggie Mae!

Not so happy knowing she's not attending the concert with us. She really likes being with her people and misses us when we leave her.

Maggie and Charger on a date, Christmas 2006; they share a love of good food!

Maggie has loved flowers since she was a puppy; maybe it's the Beagle, hound-dog thing, but she will stick her nose in the flower and smell them. She's a proponent of the "stop and smell the roses" lifestyle!

Maggie has always had furniture privileges, but what has always made me laugh is how she likes to sleep on pillows on the furniture. That makes her seem a wee bit "high maintenance" don't you think?

Since she was a puppy, Maggie has always enjoyed watching TV.

She loves opening presents!

Our apartment complex in 2001 had an annual Halloween party for our pets; I don't generally celebrate Halloween any more, but this was more of a pet-owner thing to get together and laugh at the frenzied, party-clad pets! Maggie has always been such a great sport!

Christmas Traditions
For me, Christmas is about celebrating the birth, life, ministry, death, resurrection, and ascension of Jesus Christ. What do you give "the guy who has everything, not to mention created everything?!" We serve Him by serving others. So I ask God each season to show me WHO needs a little Jesus. Sometimes I give an anonymous gift to someone in need (financially). Sometimes it's a card to someone hurting. Sometimes it's my time to someone who needs someone to care. Sometimes it's a smile or open door for someone at the mall. When we ask God to show us who needs Him, you'll begin to see all kinds of hurting or struggling hearts behind the smiles all around you. I find great joy and intimacy with God by being a vessel to allow Jesus to love others through me.

Hiking along Trout Haven, Divide, Colorado.

Last year...I saw black bears lumbering down the mountain where we camped. This year, wildlife sightings include: mother deer and fawn; chipmunk, muskrat, trout, a LabPoodle (designer dog), llamas, grasshoppers, and beagles (Maggie and ShoeShine-the Underdog! upon return home).

One of my fondest observations is the wind rushing thru the Aspen trees; it sounds like rushing water and is extremely relaxing!

Sometimes the inspiration to be a Tourist Dork just strikes!

Forget 'sea level' at times, we were driving at 'cloud level.'

Enroute...the drive to Pikes Peak Summit was 19 miles and took 1 hour to drive due to steep incline and continuous sharp curves!

John Travolta, You've Come A Long Way, Baby!

The remake of the movie, Hairspray, opens soon. For some reason, the role of Edna Tumblad has always been played by a guy. When I saw the musical, the role was hysterically played by the overweight guy from the last episode of Seinfeld (you know the one they laughed at and got arrested because of The Good Samaritan law); he's a very talented actor!

John Travolta reprises the role of Edna in this movie version. ..... My, from Sweathog Vinny Barbarino to Edna Tumblad, you've come along way, Baby!

As a teen, I had a crush on Vinny Barbarino, the hunky, but dense Sweathog on Welcome Back Kotter. (In looking at old clips from that show, I'm reminded just why I love Seinfeld so much!) He came to Dallas on some kind of promotional tour when he was just getting started in this role. I was about 15 and went to see him.

We got him to sing "Babarino" which he seemed to enjoy doing for us! Ron Pallilo (Horshack) seen behind him doesn't look very interested in watching the dance.
Yeah, you remember this song, right?!

And of course, this autographed photo was a delight!

It's raining today.

Again!

Last year we were in drought conditions with watering restrictions. It's already early July and I am still pasty white in color. The sun rarely shines, hidden behind dark, low-hanging, ominous clouds ready to pour buckets at any moment.

For the 4th, the forecasters predicted storms and to move holiday celebrations indoors. For once, they were wrong! We had sun for a few hours! And we actually got to take the bikes down to the lake and ride. The lake water was really high. Debris was up on the shoreline indicating how high the water has been recently. The dog park has been taken over by the ducks, rightfully so at this point because the grass is beneath the newly formed ponds. Seriously, ducks were on the lake, but they had also taken up residence on the duck park ponds! Afterwards, we were able to enjoy a leisure lunch on a great outdoor patio. Just as we were walking back to the truck, the sky opened up again.

So, with the constant rain, comes new ways to entertain myself. I'm reading more. I signed up with a trainer so that I can learn some new exercise strategies. Sadly, he's into lunges, which I was hoping to avoid. Now I look like a dork because I rediscovered long-dormant muscles I'd forgotten until I had to do the lunges. I've always done bent-knee push-ups because, heck, I'm a girl and they're much easier. He makes me do the other kind. I can not do them properly! He assures me, he will get me there. Sigh...he is actually going to make me work out! And hard! He's also pointing out things in my diet he calls 'empty calories.' Are they really empty if they're part of my favorite food groups? He says "yes."

He did tell me about this free website; sparkpeople.com It's a pretty cool site...check it out sometime you find yourself landlocked with the rain and nothing to do.

Is "Thank You" ever enough? The importance of Memorial Day.

I like that holidays such as Memorial Day give us a 3-day weekend, but to me, it's more than that. In my family, we were raised to stand and sing along with the Star Spangled Banner, say the Pledge of Allegiance, and go to patriotic events such as Air Shows on patriotic holidays. This heritage has stayed with me. I still hang my American flag out front on my house and buy poppies from the veterans as these holidays are about more than a 3-day weekend and cookout for me. And it kind of bugs me when I see people milling about and talking during the singing of the national anthem.

My dad, who was orphaned when he was 12, quit high school and joined the Navy at 17; he served in the Korean conflict traveling and seeing a world so very different from the small Texas town he grew up in. He was very proud of his military service and would show us photos and tells us stories. He got so many tattoos while he was in the Navy. My brother was in the Air Force for a number of years; he was never called to active duty, but we were all together (he was home on leave) the day we heard President Reagan had been shot. That was a very eerie day; we froze in front of the TV awaiting news. Was our nation under attack? Would he be shipped off to a war? We were blessed then to retain our innocence as a country a little longer when we learned it was a lone gunman with a terribly misguided mind. We had no idea what a day in our future, September 11, 2001, would bring to our security and smugness as a nation.

My Mom's family had many serve in the military. She is one of 10 kids and they were a farm family. Three of her older brothers served in WWII; her brother B.W. was exempt from serving because he was the 'last boy' at home and needed by the family to work the farm. But, he was compelled to join and serve. He had a bad ear and was rejected by 3 branches of the military; the Army accepted him. Now, my grandparents had their 3 eldest sons far from home fighting a war.

Somewhere in the Philippines, my uncle B.W. died; they never recovered his body. That alone made his loss so much more difficult for my grandparents. This photo I found on Ancestry .com .

In my Grandmother's last years, she was moved to a nursing home; she left behind the majority of all the things she'd spent a lifetime collecting. But she had this big black purse she always kept near her at the nursing home. When she died, we learned of the contents she held so close to her heart... the letters her sons wrote her from war. In that day, a soldier wrote a letter and a photograph of the letter was sent. If a soldier communicated something unacceptable (i.e. anything that might give confidential info such as location, etc.) it would be blacked out with a marker. Sometimes they sent a very brief telegram. It was surreal reading these letters written so many decades earlier. They were upbeat; they tried to calm my grandparents' concerns for them. Then, came the telegram from the military officials informing my grandparents that my uncle was M.I.A. Then, the 'we regret to inform you' letter where they confirmed he had died. That's all the information my grandparents received. Then, letters from my uncles who had learned the news and were researching to see if they could find out any other information through their military connections. And the letter from a fellow soldier friend of B.W. who wrote the family about what a great guy he was. There is an "In Grateful Memory "certificate that reads in part: "He (B.W.) stands in the unbroken line of patriots who have dared to die that freedom might live, and grow, and increase it's blessings. Freedom lives, and through it, He lives in a way that humbles the undertakings of most men." The certificate is signed by Franklin D Roosevelt, US President.

The contents of Grandmother's purse she kept so close to her at the nursing home showed that even though more than three decades had passed since her son had died, her grief had not subsided.

A friend of mine from high school is currently in Iraq; he is a nurse and tells stories about the wounded that come in. He has two small daughters back here at home with his wife and the hardest patients for him to treat are the innocent Iraqi children. A former boyfriend was an Army Captain and a member of the elite Army Rangers who defended us in Desert Storm; his brother, a marine, also served. Their older brother is a Colonel who recently returned from Iraq.

In Dallas, a group of veterans gather at the DFW terminal each week to greet soldiers returning home for a brief respite and are also there to send off the soldiers returning to Iraq. Click here to see this heartwarming and inspiring message.

How can we not be touched by the horrors of war?! And to be inspired by the bravery of those who defend freedom and human rights at the expense of the nightmares that will haunt them when they return home--and for some, at the expense of their very lives? I think a nation like the US that has been blessed by God has a sovereign responsibility to defend the innocent who are victims of the insanity of the likes of holocaust and genocide...even as incredibly difficult as it is for the soldiers who must be brave and for the loving families that stand behind them.

Somehow, 'thank you' feels so inadequate at times like this. But how do you bundle all that you think and feel and want to communicate to a soldier or veteran for the work and sacrifice he/she does on our behalf?

Maybe we should at least try to say 'thank you.' And be a little more respectful the next time the nation's anthem is played while Old Glory waves.

Random Friday...

It continues to rain out ... I know it's good to help our lakes recover from the drought last year, but I miss the sun!

At the garden, we've been learning about composting; can you believe the temperature actually gets as hot as 160 degrees and this is a good thing?! (Okay, admittedly, I never had chemistry, but "wow!" I had no idea grass clippings and dead leaves would have that effect when mixed together and allowed to bake (more like roast!).

One of the many things I love about the garden is getting to know people. One girl is a college student and invaluable with her wit and willingness to always help. She is always there, and we're always laughing! She's going to Great Britain on a family vacation. I thought it was funny to make up a chance meeting with the Queen; I changed her T-shirt to make it read like she is a prince-loving tourist! When she saw this photo, she asked "why do I speak to you?!"

Not even Dave is safe from photo manipulation, as evidenced by his hood look!

Our friend Billy plays along...he's dressed like this because he was not born a Texan, but we took him out and naturalized him not long ago; now he's a bonafide card-carrying naturalized Texan, y'all. This photo was made on this grassy area between the Old School Book Depository Bldg (where Oswald was perched when he reportedly shot Kennedy) and that is the Hyatt Regency Hotel and Reunion Tower in the background.

Resolutions...

Did you make any resolutions as 2007 dawned? How are you doing with them? I don't know the stats, but it's a fact that many people do not achieve their 'good intention resolutions' set at the beginning of a new year. Why not make this the year we succeed?!

A friend and I made an accountability pact for the month of May. Today...on May 21, we took a look at the 'hard facts' for how we're doing. Sometimes, friends in support of one another, will agree that something is progress. And sometimes a 'cold hard fact reality check' is needed for a true assessment. That is today.

My friend asked... "Does it count?" in reference to a 'doing this vs. the previously committed to task" ... that really got me to thinking.

I realize that to succeed takes 3 things: Knowledge, Inspiration, and Perspiration.
Knowledge...knowing the true facts necessary to achieve change vs. thinking I know
Inspiration...Being inspired to truly commit and remain on task to change
Perspiration...the willingness to work for it and to do it!

Because some of my May goals were to improve on my workout routine and overall condition and health, I found the 'cool tools' on this website helpful in truly understanding the impact some of my choices make!

Community Garden

I've gotten involved with a community garden. It's a new garden that rose up from an old parking lot. We can keep anything we grow, but are asked to donate any surplus to the Food Pantry. They help people in need and 30% of their customers are diabetic and in great need of affordable nutritious foods. Most of our garden harvest will go to the pantry. It's very rewarding to work on this project!

Being a community garden, we're meeting some really neat people from diverse backgrounds. From girl scouts to retirees, engineers to firemen, computer geeks to school teachers, we're an eclectic group! And we're having so much fun learning from and getting to know each other!

This week, we're preparing for our grand opening Saturday. We'll have a ribbon cutting, refreshments, lots of balloons, and a whole lot of fun! Our arbor was just built, as you can see from the photo below, after that photo was taken, we've added a lot of pretty potted plants. Last nite was really cool...almost all the gardeners were there, setting up, planting trees and flowers, working in their gardens. High enthusiasm among this group!

Landscape Bliss!

I love learning about landscaping and gardening. With a little knowledge, inspiration, and perspiration, our yard --front and back-- is really beginning to be a lovely sight! The rains this year have also helped!

Our current project is replacing the sod in front. We started by trimming the trees back so the air could circulate and the sun reach through to the ground. For the past three days, by hand (i.e. shovel) we've been digging up the ground, going about 6 inches deep. We'll eventually till in compost and top soil using a tiller, but we wanted to get started by hand. I'm very excited about this project, and am actually enjoying the physical labor aspect of the project. I find being outdoors, working in creation, and then enjoying the fruits of my labor so very inspiring; I also immensely enjoy relaxing outdoors and just enjoying the sensory beauty of the work once completed!

When Inspiration Goes Awry...

Sometimes inspiration strikes and 'IT' seems like a really good idea.

My recent inspiration had been percolating for a few weeks, so, it's not like I rushed into anything. I decided I should cut my hair. Short.

I've gone to my hairstylist, Michael, for 22 years, so he really knows me, and my hair. He thought it was a good idea. Dave thought it was a good idea. And since I'd been thinking about it for a while, I really thought it was a good idea.

After the cut, there was more hair on the floor, than on my head. Uh oh!

Before Dave came home from work, he asked how things turned out. When he arrived, he offered "fresh flowers for hair cut day." Tender.

I think I'm doomed for a few bad hair days ahead of me; at least until it grows out again. Like "the sister" in this video clip, I too have considered scampering under the bed and living out my life in darkness. But then, I remember that somewhere along the way of turning 40, I've chilled a bit and things don't really bother me much anymore. So, I guess I can live with looking like a total dork for a few months.

Fins and feathers were out in mass in Frisco Saturday nite. Jimmy Buffet was in town!

I am fascinated by the amazing phenom he has inspired. ParrotHeads who've followed him for decades, are organized chaos of Carribean-inspired dressed, fun-loving creative souls. In many communities, they raise money for charity and conservation efforts.

I watched his easy smile while he sang and was touched by his genuine good-natured personality. He shows up to work in a T, shorts and flip flops, which he quickly kicks off. He spends the evening singing, playing his guitar all the while dancing around barefoot having every bit as much fun as his fans. And more than once, as he spoke to his legion of fans nearing full-capacity in a 20,000 stadium, he shared with heartfelt emotion, 'thank you for the good life you've given me.'

Dave and I arrived early, sat outside sipping a rum drink and just being thoroughly entertained by everyone's dress and actions as they let loose for an afternoon having fun. Once inside, it was a sea of at least 1,0000 multi-colored beach balls and sharks being batted around the stadium–it went on all nite! The entire concert, everyone stood, dancing, and singing along. It was a beautiful breeze-filled evening with a near full moon. Buffet joked that he brought the weather with him, a little tongue-in-cheek since that's the title of his new CD. The only thing that would have been more perfect would have been listening to the music while lying back on a white sandy beach!

I'm not a proponet of heavy drinking and drugs, but I do like the easy lifestyle he sings about, and share his love of the ocean. If it's been a while since you've enjoyed some Buffet, enjoy these...(and if you've never been to a show, yeah, it really is like these videos!).

Maggie Mae always finds her way into photos. I think she secretly desires to be a reality TV star, and hopes someone will finally discover her! Here, she does her impression of a laughing hyena. Or maybe it's Tickle Me Elmo.

I'm amazed at the size of some of my roses this year! They are really big! (Seriously, look at your fist; now imagine a rose about more than 2x that size!)

And some are just really pretty!

And bushes are just loaded with blooms!

I love that a bouquet of roses greets me each time I drive up the driveway!

Annuals and ivy in early bloom. I love a splash of color against a dull brick wall!

I wish the photos could really convey the true beauty I see outside my windows. And the rose fragrance is wonderful!

A Secret Faith Revealed

Sunday, our pastor Pete was teaching from John 18-19 and I learned something I hadn't understood before.

In the hours of Jesus' suffering and eventual death on the Cross, people were very fearful. Of all the people who had believed Him to be the Messiah, only a few were there with Him while He paid the penalty on the Cross for us.

But this is what I found so interesting--and inspiring. There were two men who were believers of Jesus, but had been fearful of living their faith in a way that others knew they were Christians. Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. Yet at the time when it was most unpopular and dangerous to be a follower of Christ, they stepped forward, out of the 'closet of their faith' and their actions were recorded for all of eternity in the Bible.

"Later, Joseph of Arimathea asked Pilate for the body of Jesus. Now Joseph was a disciple of Jesus, but secretly because he feared the Jews. With Pilate's permission, he came and took the body away. He was accompanied by Nicoemus, the man who earlier had visited Jesus at night. Nicodemus brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about seventy-five pounds. Taking Jesus' body, the two of them wrapped it, with the spices, in strips of linen. This was in accordance with Jewish burial customs. At the place where Jesus was crucified, there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one had ever been laid." (John 19:38-41, NIV).

Where did their sudden confidence come from? They'd just seen the terrible beating Jesus had innocently endured. Surely they were still very fearful. Yet somehow, they decided to act in spite of their fear, to honor Jesus. I find that very inspiring. Pete also pointed out that the 75 pounds of spices Nicodemus brought were the burial preparations generally reserved for a King. They were preparing Christ's body for a King's burial--they recognized who He was and were not afraid to do so publicly.

I wonder how many people today believe in Jesus, but are not comfortable sharing Him with others? They live a private faith. But in Matthew 28, Jesus asks us to go into the world and tell everyone about Him. Will you?

The Physical Death of Jesus' Crucifixion

At Easter, we celebrate the resurrection and are reminded of Christ’s suffering on the Cross. We all have a point of reference to understand suffering. However, Jesus endured extreme suffering; some began before the Cross. As He prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, the agony of His pending fate caused Him to sweat blood.

Can we ever fully understand the suffering and penalty Jesus paid for ours sins? During this Holy Season of celebrating our risen Savior, take a moment to reflect on the price Jesus paid for us, for you, for me, so that we might spend eternity in Heaven with Him. The following is excerpted from “Reason and Revelation” copyright of Apologetics Press. It is a difffult read, but one that depicts a greater understanding of the completed work of Jesus on the Cross. He gave His life for us in love so we might have eternal life. My pastor taught from John 18 yesterday. He said at the time of Christ's death on the cross, a total of 332 Old Testament prophecies had come true.

Jesus was scourged. “In their critically acclaimed article, “On the Physical Death of Jesus Christ,” in the March 21, 1986 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association, William Edwards and his coauthors (of the famed Mayo Clinic) described the instrument used by the Roman soldiers for flogging as “a short whip (flagrum or flagellum) with several single or braided leather thongs of variable lengths, in which small iron balls or sharp pieces of sheep bones were tied at intervals” (Edwards, et al., 1986, 256:1457, parenthetical item in orig.). Edwards and his colleagues described Christ’s scourging in the following manner: “Then, as the flogging continued, the lacerations would tear into the underlying skeletal muscles and produce quivering ribbons of bleeding flesh. Pain and blood loss generally set the stage for circulatory shock (1986, 256:1457).”

“Having suffered considerable blood loss from the scourging, Jesus likely was in a dehydrated state when He finally reached the top of this small knoll. Jesus was offered two drinks at Golgotha. The first—a drugged wine (i.e., mixed with myrrh) that served as a mild analgesic to deaden some of the pain—was offered immediately upon His arrival (Shroud, 1871; Davis, 1965, p. 186). However, after having tasted it, Christ refused the concoction. He chose to face death with a clear mind so He could conquer it willfully as He submitted Himself to the cruelty of the cross. “And when they came to a place called Golgotha, they offered him wine to drink, mixed with gall; but when he tasted it, he would not drink it” (Matthew 27:33-34). This particular drink was intended to dull the pain in preparation for the next step of crucifixion—the nailing of the hands and feet. Thus, it would have been around this time that a battered, bleeding Jesus was thrown to the ground and nailed to the cross.

“Christ’s hands and feet were nailed to the cross. Archaeological data indicate that the specific nails used during the time of Christ’s crucifixion were tapered iron spikes five to seven inches long with a square shaft approximately three-eighths of an inch across (Haas, 1970; Tzaferis, 1970; Clements, 1992, p. 108). Various studies have demonstrated that the bony palms cannot support the weight of a body hanging from them (e.g., Barbet, 1953). The weight of the body would tear quite easily through the lumbricals and flexor tendons—breaking the metacarpal bones as the nails pulled free—allowing the body to fall to the Earth. However, in ancient terminology, the wrist was considered to be part of the hand (Barbet, 1953, p. 106; Davis, 1965, p. 184; Major, 1999, 19:86).

“The pain Christ must have experienced up to this point would have been excruciating, and yet the Roman soldiers were about to deliver even more. There were many ways to nail the feet to the stipes, but most required the knees to be flexed and rotated laterally. It would not be uncommon by this time for insects to burrow into open wounds or orifices (such as the nose, mouth, ears, and eyes) of a crucified victim; additionally birds of prey frequently were known to feed off the tattered wounds (Cooper, 1883). It was in this position, with His precious blood seeping down the cross, that Christ uttered the amazing statement: “Father, forgive them; for they know not what they do” (Luke 23:34).

“Even though blood poured from His lacerated back, one major pathophysiological impairment Jesus faced during crucifixion was normal respiration (i.e., breathing). Maximum inhalation would have been possible only when the body weight was supported by the nailed wrists of the outstretched arms. When Christ first was lifted onto the splinter-covered surface of the cross, His arms and body were stretched out in the form of a “Y.” A momentary “T” position would be required to allow proper support for inhalation. Thus, in order to breathe He was required to lift His body using His nailed wrists for leverage. Exhalation would be impossible in this position, and the immense pain placed on the wrists quickly would become too great; therefore, Christ would have to slump back into a “Y” position to exhale. Jesus would be forced to continue alternating between the “Y” and “T” positions with every breath, trying all the while not to reopen the wounds He had received from the scourging. Fatigued muscles eventually would begin to spasm, and Christ would become exhausted from these repeated tasks, slumping permanently into the shape of a “Y.” In this position, chest and respiratory muscles soon would become paralyzed from the increased strain and pain. Without strength for breath, Christ’s body would begin to suffer from asphyxia.

“As insects and dogs circled, and as passersby spat on Him, Christ—with blood dripping from the open wounds on His back and nail holes in His hands and feet—shouldered the sins of the world. As exposed nerves exploded into unbearable pain with each movement, and as His internal organs began failing due to a lack of sufficient oxygen, for the first and only time in His life, Jesus found Himself separated from His Father. Matthew 27:46 describes His anguish: “And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, ‘Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?’ that is, ‘My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?’ ” This was the first time in His life, so far as Scripture records, that Jesus did not address God as His Father. Isaiah 59:2 informs us of that separation, and the reason that God had to turn His face from His sin-laden Son: “But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid His face from you, so that he will not Hear.”

“It is with both medical and biblical certainty that we know Christ died upon the cross at Calvary. He was laid in a tomb with nail wounds in His hands and feet, and still possessed those scars following His resurrection. The extreme physical insults to Christ’s body left Him ragged, torn, bleeding, and tormented with pain. Yet He endured willingly all the agony and torment of the cross for each one of us. We would do well to heed the advice of the writer of the book of Hebrews, who said: “Let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God (12:2).”

“Oh, the overwhelming love that God showed each one of us when He allowed His only begotten Son to suffer that excruciating (Latin, excruciates, or “out of the cross”) pain and agony—for our sake!

I'm probably one of the last people to hear of Mika, but Wow! He is a throwback to my youth. Having grown up with a musical-minded older brother, I was exposed to a lot of different styles when I was young.

Mika reminds me of Freddie Mercury (Queen), Prince, mixed with a little Mick Jagger and Beatles' psychedelic. I like his energy, vocal range, style, drummer, and curls.

El Aserradero (The Mill)

I grew up going to the original Six Flags Over Texas. When I was young, the park theme was truly based on the Six Flags that flew over Texas (Mexico, Spain, France, Confederate States of America, the Republic of Texas, and the United States of America). There were some really cool rides, La Salle's Adventure (a river boat adventure), Spelunker's Cave (the date makeout ride!), the Run-away Mine Train, and El Aserrado (the old log mill flume ride--the world's first!). A couple years ago, my friend Michele and I went to Six Flags during the week for a concert; we played hookey (okay, we took vacation days, but it sounds more cool if I say we played hookey) from work.

It's a different park now than from my youth. Now, it's very commercial with rides like Batman: The Ride, Mr. Freeze, Superman Tower of Power, the Texas Giant, and the Wildcatter. We rode lots of the wild, fast, gut-wrenching rides, having a blast. Then we stumbled on El Aserradero. I instantly remembered alll the wonderful times I rode this ride with my family; we laughed at the simplicity of this old ride among all the modern ones. But we decided riding it was a must and we'd enjoy a relaxing ride. Once in our flume, we floated somewhat aimlessly through the water, catching sharp curves and an occasional splash of cooling water. We really began to laugh as the log climbed a steep hill near the end. I was in the front, and it was all I could do to hold on and not slam back into Michele. We teetered for just a moment at the top, then it dropped us into a free-fall. The picture shown here was captured by the ride's camera just as we fell into the free-fall. Michele couldn't believe I'd spend $7 for a polaroid photo, especially one that is less than glamorous. But I love the youthful look of pure glee on our faces. Going to Six Flags as a child was a magical experience for me. And for a brief moment, all of my adult cares were gone and I was a kid again as we torpedoed down that steep embankment with a big splash of water awaiting us at the finale.

In my class at church, we just wrapped up a fascinating study on Christian Apologetics (the reliability of Scripture and historical evidences for the Bible). For me, faith has come easy, but for some it is more difficult needing facts and evidence. The study is amazing because of the concrete evidence supporting the reliabilty of Scripture, the historical evidences of Jesus' life, ministry, death, and resurrection.

I received this today in an email from a friend; unfortunately, I do not know who the author is. But I like the way it illustrates Jesus' supremacy in ways we can relate.

A Little Spring

Spring has arrived in North Texas. And with the wonderful spring forward time change from a couple of weeks ago, the days are longer and the outdoors beckon! Dave and I will be planting our garden soon. My perennials are beginning to peek through the soil. The Bradford Pear trees are in full bloom.

It Only Appears...

We had a glorious ceremony, more wonderful than I could have dreamed, a sunny and adventurous honeymoon, and now we are settling into married life (home organization--ugh! not my strength!). I've always said I was rich because of the wonderful people God gives me for friends. I have several that I've known since I was a child. One of the exciting things about our upcoming wedding is the blending of lives and the ability to introduce friends from different aspects of our lives to each other. Yesterday was a prelude to what is to come. I have two girlfriends as my honor attendants and they met for the first time yesterday (our waiter who took the photo is very tall, and was not tipsy, depsite what the quality of the photo would imply). Lina (on the right) I've known for 30 years this summer! Lisa, (far left) I met in college and we've been close every since. My Mom is there and she has been my rock through the years. There are many other wonderful people participating and attending the wedding and I just look so forward to the day of celebration with God as our foremost witness and all of these wonderful people joining in! I got a beautiful wedding dress, but, since my honor attendants and scripture reader are so beautiful, I'm thinking I may need to get a dress with flashing neon lights so people will not spend the whole ceremony looking at them. I adore these girls...we've shared so much of life together! And they love me too.

When I got in from church today, I unlocked the door so Dave could just let himself in when he arrived. I was in the kitchen and heard the door open twice. Instinct kicked in, and I knew Maggie must have ran out the door and he'd gone after her. Sure enough, I went out, and he was down the street looking for her. She's a beagle and when outside, the nose just takes over! My heart stopped when I realized no one knew where she was. One neighbor guessed that maybe she'd gone through his yard to the alley. So I took off running in my dress and boots calling out to her. Dave took off the other direction. A lady on the street behind me had just seen her. Fortunately, this nightmare only lasted a few minutes. Another neighbor a few doors down had found her in his garage, staring adoringly at their refrigerator, wagging her tail. His wife had taken her and placed her in my house while Dave and I were frantically looking for her.

I like to think she has a good life here. Lots of love, doggie treats, and as you can see from this photo made in December, full furniture privileges. But, a beagle will forever be a 2-year old, never thinking to look before crossing streets, or to remember she's not allowed to go off by herself. Tonite, she just wanted to lie on both Dave and me as we sat together on the couch watching TV. She is love. And I am thankful she is safe and home!

Sometimes Life Moves Fast!

Dave and I planned to elope. Then we decided to have a small ceremony. But we needed to stay with our original date because of some things with Dave's career. So...I find myself planning a wedding in 3 weeks! My life has definitely picked up a few RPMs!

It has been so cool to watch God at work! He's opened doors that amaze me! From the beautiful ceremony location (the original person who had booked my date months ago, had called just 2 days earlier and asked to move their event to a new date), to the help from friends, to front row parking at the mall when I was on a tight time schedule...big and little the blessings are all around.

But the greatest of the blessings is Dave! He told me early on he knew he could marry me. More than a year later, I have learned what it is like to be loved unconditionally. I always dreamed of that, but never experienced it. He loves God so much and it is evident in how he treats me. He is really smart, can build/fix anything, not to mention he is really handsome with awesome blue eyes! He is very inspiring to me!

A Perfect Day

Don't you love it when a day unfolds with wonderful unexpected surprises? Yesterday was a day like that for me.

After church, Dave and I spent time outdoors. We had nothing planned, but finally after all the clouds, cold, rain, ice, and snow, we had a warm and sunny day that beckoned us outside. We planted seeds for tomatoes and jalapeno peppers; we're going to have a little garden this year! We also worked in the yard, then went to a nearby nature preserve for a walk.

Later we stopped by a friend's place. He had invited us over, but didn't tell us, or his family, that we'd all be there. These are amazing people in my life. We met over 30 years ago. They are all originally from Colombia and some of my favorite people on this planet. My friend's aunt instantly recognized me, although she hasn't seen me in 31 years. When we all saw each other, it was such a rush of memories, emotions, hugs, and everyone talking at once!

I met my friend and his sister when they were still living in Miami, just visiting his Aunt, Uncle, and cousins for the summer. There were 5 of us, Lina, Orlando, Donnie, Jerry, and me. That magical summer before any of us were old enough to work; the next year, we all had jobs. But that summer, we lived all day at the pool, and at night on the front porch of one of our homes talking until our parents all called us in. This summer, it will be 30 years ago that we met. And the friendships that began when we were so young, have lasted 3 decades now. Some friends come into our lives for a season. Others, become such an integral part, with a watermark on our heart. I know that we all share a love for God, and each other. We are all such big fans of each other; and always have been. There is something remarkable about friendships like this and I feel so blessed to have such amazing people in my life. It was a really special day!

I read this on news.yahoo.com: Since 1886, Phil has seen his shadow 96 times, hasn't seen it 15 times and there are no records for nine years, according to the Punxsutawney Groundhog Club. The last time Phil failed to see his shadow was in 1999.

Does life ever feel like the same song, just a different tune? That you are somehow caught on ‘the hampster wheel’ of life, repeating the same drudgery day-after-day? Do relationships always end in disappointment? The diet always fails. The weight never comes off. You never get around to getting the credit cards paid off. When Inspiration Fades...

Sometimes we work really hard at something. We pray, ask God's guidance, and do our best. But still, failure and disappointment comes.

Monday, the title of a poem kept coming to my mind, "I Know Why the Caged Bird SIngs" by Mayou Angelo (I"d never read it before). Monday evening, I received an email from a friend who was really struggling. Things are really tough for her right now. And I told her how I asked God, as "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings" kept coming to mind, what He wanted me to understand from this. I think, it's that even when things are tough, even when things outside our control cause us to struggle, we are to seek God. To find His joy in our heart.

Then, I clicked across this song on youtube by 'accident' ... "Praise You in the Storm" by Casting Crowns; I hear it often on the radio, but this week, it has particular meaning to me as I have stumbled across my own rock of disappointment. Something I've worked very hard at, has hit a bad snag causing me to miss an important deadline. I don't know how it will turn out, but I know God does. So, I seek Him.

My friend, Moggy, who is a talented artist and the creator of My Life is a Cartoon sent me a link for Akiane.

Akiane is an amazingly talented young girl with a life obviously touched and blessed by God.She was born to an atheistic, stay-at-home Lithuanian homemaker mother, and an American father, chef, and dietary manager in 1994. She speaks four languages: Lithuanian, Russian, English, and Sign Language. She began drawing at the age of 4, painting at the age of 6. At 4, she had a life-changing spiritual transformation, bringing the family to God. The inspiration for her art and literature comes from her visions, dreams, observations of people, nature, and God. She wants people to find hope in her paintings and for them to be her gift to God. She describes herself as having a daring heart and a cautious mind. Her biggest wish is that "everyone would love God and one another."

Argentine Tango

After dinner last nite, Dave and I decided to try an independent coffee house...we went for their live music. We had a pleasant surprise in that the last Friday of the month is actually Argentine Tango. There is this cool room there, with comfy couches, pretty photos, richly painted walls, a beautiful ornate double door, and lots of candles. A room rich with ambience.

The dancing was beautiful, as was the music. The thing I found so inspiring was the people. It was a true international mix. Everyone was very friendly. I met Sita from India--the Argentine Tango is in her soul. And Jesus from Puerto Rico; his eyes lit up when he spoke of dancing in PR. We met a couple of dance instructors from Iran. Hassan, an Al Pacino double, is Sita's instructor. And Nasrin, spoke of the feminine beauty of the dance. Another married couple there are also instructors; George is from Argentine, his wife Jairelbhi is from Venezuela.

It was a delightful evening of exotic hot tea and beautiful tango...even the candle flames seemed to dance in harmony with the music and dancers.

A Great Date!

Maggie's had a boyfriend for several years. His name is Charger and he is from Maryland. He 'bawks' like a good Yankee dog. Well, actually, since he is a Jack Russell Terrier, it's more of a white-knuckle, ear-piercing shriek. He likes to chase squirrels, bark at squirrels, and eat liver treats.

Recently, Charger and his People came over for a visit. It was a great date. He brought her a gift. They ate treats. And chased each other around the house. This one of my favorite photos of them. They are looking at Maggie's bag of dog food in the pantry. They are adorable together!

I really enjoy flowers indoors. Dave surprised me this weekend with tulips. All week, I've enjoyed watching them slowly open in bloom. It is a pretty, sunny day today and I took them outdoors to sunbathe (the flowers, not me). I thought I'd share their beauty with you, too!

Eternal Hope

Maybe you've heard or read it before, "Everything I Need to Know, I Learned from my Dog" ...

For example,

- Run, romp, and play daily.
- On warm days, stop to lie on your back in the grass.
- Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.
- Be loyal. Always.
- If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.
- When someone you love is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

My Maggie has taught me this and more. She adds humor to my life. One of the things that amazes me about her is her 'eternal hope.' She is a beagle. And beagles think about eating. All the time. And she is ever hopeful that somehow, food has materialized in her bowl. She'll be asleep in the bedroom, lying in a stream of sunshine. The first thing she does upon awakening is to go to the kitchen and check her bowl to see if there is any food there. She goes out to potty, comes in, and goes straight to her bowl to see if there is any food (see photo below). She'll sit and look out our front window watching people in the park. And suddenly, a thought passes through her mind, "Hey, I wonder if there's any food in my bowl. I haven't heard Mom go to the kitchen, but maybe...?" and off she goes to check. She never finds in food in her bowl. She scarfs it all down in under 17 seconds at mealtime. And licks her plate clean. There is nothing left. She is 14 years old. Not once has there ever been food in her bowl. But she never gives up hope. Because, just maybe, this is the time she'll find her beloved treasure of food morsel.

I think God wants us to have that kind of hope. The kind that never wavers. A hope that is eternal. Always believing the best is yet to be. And that just maybe, today we'll find that for which we hope.

Xol for the Soul

Yesterday, it was a sunny 45degree day. Since the weather has been so bad, that was my cue to get out and enjoy the day. I went to the Arboretum. The workers were all getting ready for the Spring Dallas Blooms, planting lots of bulbs. Even when so much of nature is dormant, there is just something wonderful, a renewal, of being outdoors for a long walk. There were only a handful of people in the entire park. So, for more than 2 hours, I walked, soaked in the sun, watched nature, listened to the birds sing and the leaves rustling around me.

Neither the birds, nor the squirrels seemed afraid of me. Almost as if they welcomed me to their little place of Heaven.

It was a day of pure tranquility!

Perils of Overload

This past decade, I got caught up in my career. Very demanding and long hours. A lot of travel. And more long hours on the road. I loved my work, but the pace was so fast and the stress to deliver, very high. My personal world was lacking as I had no time for me.

My health started declining. I saw one of my doctors yesterday for a follow-up appt. He told me I look like a completely different person from the last time he saw me. He said I have 'life' in my face again. Eight months ago, my request for a reassignment and relocation resulted in my job ending. My dr. likened the situation to the proverbial frog in the water. Put a frog in cold water, and slowly turn up the heat and he never jumps out because he acclimates to the temperature and eventually dies. Sometimes, when we're in the midst of the pressure cooker, we think we have no other options. How do we stop?! Will we be able to keep our house if we change jobs? Will we get another job? Will we survive? We're too stressed out, and too tired, to think clearly. So, we shrug off thinking about it and keep chasing the train speeding away from us.

I think we all need to stop occasionally and take an inventory of our life. How is our health? Do we have time for the priorities in our life? Do we spend time with God? Get adequate rest and exercise. Are we eating to nourish our body? Or just grabbing junk food to temporarily numb the hunger? From my circumstances, I learned that I need to pay attention to the message, and stop second guessing myself or what God is showing me. Step forward in faith and confidence. And make a change for the better!

TGIF!

Fear

Along with about 1800 people from my church, we are studying the NT in a daily study called The Journey (see link to the right). Each study follows a chapter, has a key verse, and a central truth. Today's study is Matthew 14. The key verse is: But Jesus immediately said to them: "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid.” (Matthew 14:27)

Each day's study includes a personal devotional written by a member of my church along with discussion questions. I like the questions offered today, because I think if taken to God in prayer, He'll show us the fears tucked away in our heart, replacing them with His truth. And peace, His peace, that passes all understanding, regardless of our circumstances.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS (written by Jill):

1. Identify the areas in your life where you lack faith. Read through Matthew 14 and ask God to help you understand the kind of faith He wants you to have.

2. List what you are fearful of. Exchange each fear with a truth from God's word. Practice replacing faith for fear throughout your day.

3. What storm are you facing today? Pray to keep your eyes focused on Him, not your storm. List any positives that have already occurred. Share your storm with a trusted friend or family member.

4. Memorize Matthew 14:27.

Desperate Measures

We do not often get snow in Texas. Sometimes sleet, or something they now call frozen rain, but not often snow. The weather lately has really been creating havoc for everyone. Businesses, churches, schools announce they will be open for the day, then close 2 hours later. The news reporting weather and road conditions runs from 5am until 12:30pm. But you just have to love the childlike imagination of some!

This morning, one of the on-site reporters built a true, bona-fide snowman. From real snow. It was about 2 inches in height, the snowman, not the amount of snowfall.

I live across the street from a park and I saw this little guy. A boy about 10 years old was doing everything in his power to lug a large plastic tub from the park. It was a very laborious effort. I had to laugh, it probably seemed like a great idea initially. Go across the street to the park. Load up as much snow as he could gather in his tub. Then carry it back to his house to build a snowman. He probably didn't bargain for how heavy it would become. He lugged and pulled. Stopped and rested. Lugged and pulled some more. Finally, in exhaustion, he beckoned two of his little friends to come help. They ran over and one promptly beaned the tired little guy with a snowball. Then, the other kid sat on his tub of snow. Finally, the three of them were able to lug it to the yard of destiny. The desperate measures of enjoying the rarity of snow! I can't wait to see their craftsmanship.

To Be Used...

Last year, I asked God to increase my territory--my ability to use my talents, gifts, and passions to serve Him better. To make my life here make more of an eternal impact. I'd finally gotten around to reading the book, "The Prayer of Jabez." And I realized I could ask God to use me more. I know, it should have been obvious, but it wasn't. Funny thing, it seemed some of the areas I was serving in were right. But things outside my control began to change. At this point, the enemy would have me discouraged. But God is showing me that He is indeed increasing my territory. He has given me the opportunity to make an international reach, as well as an opportunity to serve in my county. I am very excited about this!

It's true, sometimes the challenges in our lives are so very difficult. They can impact us spiritually, mentally, emotionally, and physically. They seem to have no end in sight, and can affect our hope if we're not careful. But I think when we keep the faith, trusting even when we can't see very far ahead, it's quite possible that the long, difficult journey is taking us to a place more wonderful and beautiful than we can even dream of. Hold on to hope!

Ice Ice Baby...

My gardenia plants are decked out in chic black plastic for warmth. Maggie is wearing two sweaters. One when she needs to go outside for potty in which she gets wet from the sleet. And another one to warm her when she comes back inside. We lit a fire today. Ate delicious beefy veggie stew. I'm not inclined to venture outdoors for any reason. And I'm wearing multiple layers indoors with the heat on and a fire in the fireplace.

It's too cold. Not fond of the ice. But a slower pace is nice in which to read more, talk to friends, and spend time with God. The occasional hot toddy is nice too!

In their book, "You: The Owner's Manual" they illustrate "6 Foods to Keep Your Mind Young." Their rule of thumb is 'what is harmful to your heart, is also harmful to your brain. "Saturated fats clog arteries that lead to our brain. Good fats (omega-3 fatty acids) keep arteries clear; they also alter the neurotransmitters which reduce depression."

What Now Lord?

Sunday, December 31, a guest professor from a local seminary and member of our church spoke about serving God with our lives. He said we are generally in one of three phases depending upon the request: "Who me?!" "How me?" or "Yes me!"

Often, when God nudges us to get out of our comfort zone and serve others, defend a cause, or share Christ, we think "Who me?" But God equips us and the Holy Spirit empowers us to do the work of God. "How me?" is when we're willing but unsure of the first step. "Yes me!" is when we're willing to serve, no matter what the cost.

I find that saying "Yes" is sometimes hard, but always rewarding. Sometimes it is freeing. Sometimes unconventional in the way we think things should be. The book, "The Purpose Driven Life" reminded us that God created us uniquely to serve Him...He gave each of us talents, skills, passions, and gifts to allow us to accomplish His will for our lives. Knowing that He created me for a unique purpose is inspiring to me. So, as we begin a new year, it's okay to ask "What now, Lord?" as we seek His wisdom in the plans He has for our lives.

I always liked the line, "Time may change me, but I can't trace time." I think that is true. In Time, we can change. Disappointments can defeat us. Broken relationships can crush our spirit. Losses can cripple us. Moment by moment, a little bit of who we are chips away. And then one day we don't recognize the face in the mirror.

But, I find that as I walk with Jesus, sharing my day with Him, I'm more inclined to experience His love and comfort when I experience the blows. And rather than becoming defeated or crippled, I get a chance to know God more intimately as He works in my life and heart, changing me in a better way.

Change is definitely inevitable! And it will not always be positive change. But I find that change has a way of helping us grow and helping me draw closer to God.

A Favorable Resolution

Resolutions have taken on an unfavorable reputation. They seem doomed to fail; in fact, some say their only resolution is to make "no resolution." But God desires us to be on a continual journey to become more Christ-focused and to live a life of testimony in Christ. So perhaps 2007 will be a year that the resolutions made will actually begin a God-desired change.

This has been my thinking as I begin a new year. Instead of a negative approach to 'resolutions' I've thought about changes needed and asked God to show me things He'd like me to work on. And because He desires me to continue to grow in Him, and He has provided me with the Holy Spirit, I think I can confidently approach my areas of change with a spirit of anticipated success. God's love does transform everything...thankfully, that includes me!

The Heart of One in Iraq

A friend from high school was shipped to Iraq last Fall; he is a medic there. He sent this message, in quotations, Christmas Day...

"Hey everyone! Howdy and MERRY CHRISTMAS from Baqoubah, Forward Operations Base WARHORSE!!

FOB WARHORSE has been relatively calm today. Last night we had a Christmas cantata and worship service. I really missed my kids. Our oldest girl is 6 (already!) and quite the singer. She played an angel in a Christmas cantata at the little church we attend in Texas. My wife regularly sends mail and I'm amazed at how much both of the kids can write.. and draw! I think the girls inherited a little of dad's art/doodling gene along with a slight unibrow (but that's what tweezers are for) I called my wife. She is in Long Island with my inlaws. One daughter was already crawled up in bed with mommy.

I miss them so. We've had a few kids brought in. Gunshot wound to the head in most cases. The suspicion is the terrorists capture the family and threaten the adults: "Do as we say, tell us what we need to know etc or we will shoot this child". This is a hellish country."

.... me again: Please continue to pray for the safety of our soldiers and that God fills their hearts with His comfort as they miss the ones the love back home--and as they witness firsthand such ugliness up close. And that the people of this dark, 'hellish' country, might know the peace and love of Jesus. I remain in awe that God allowed me to live in a country founded by men who believed in Him. My freedom in America comes at the shed blood of soldiers who put on the armor of bravery and defend our country. My freedom from sin and eternal doom comes at the shed blood of Jesus my savior.

My Connection to President Ford

I've never met a US president, but I've had two brushes with what could be described as "1 degree of separation." The first was in 1982 in Austin, Texas. Stephen Ford, son of former president Gerald Ford, was on a promotional tour for his role on The Young & The Restless (that's me, with Stephen-on the right, and Dennis Cole-on the left). I didn't watch the soap, but I did recognize him years later when he played the role of Joe, Sally's boyfriend in "When Harry Met Sally" (remember the guy she's kissing at the airport?).

I was young when Gerald Ford was president. I think it's always sad when a president dies. Something about the loss of a man who once held one of the most powerful positions in the world. I like the way his wife of more than 50 years remarked about him, "His life was filled with love of God, his family and his country." Life should be experienced with a heart of love.

(No comments about my hair...it was the '80s in Texas!)

An Observation and a Reminder

Dave and I served as greeters/ushers during two services on Dec 23 and Dec 24. I observed a few interesting things. Mostly, the 'look' on each person's face. Some returned our greeting with a heartfelt one of their own. Some just smiled. Some avoided us altogether. Some came with members of their extended families and you could sense their excitement as they talked among themselves. Some walked in alone. Some single parents came with their children. Some seemed to be enjoying the spirit of the season. Others seem to carry a heavy burden. Some came early and chose a seat towards the back. Some appeared relaxed; others appeared harried.

I wondered aloud to Dave about what might be so heavy in one's life that they could not return a Christmas greeting as they entered a sanctuary. I prayed that they would be filled with peace and joy that life in Christ offers. And then God reminded me how very much we all need Jesus. Even in the Seasons of our life when things are going well and a smile comes easy to our face. And especially during the painful times we all experience at some time. Even though Christmas has passed, may we never forget how very much we need Jesus as our Lord and Savior!

Surrendered Dream

A little more than a year and a half ago, I attended a church retreat. For too long, I had been working too many hours and having no time for anything else in my life. I was new to my church and really didn't know anyone, so it gave me great alone time with God. One morning at sunrise, I sat outdoors reading the Bible, not really sure where to start except one scripture where I asked God to look at the depths of my heart and show me anything He found displeasing. He revealed to me that I had an unfulfilled desire that had caused bitterness to build up towards Him. Wow! I was not aware. I prayed asking His forgiveness and to help me to deal with it.

The next morning, as the retreat was coming to a close, we were given little pieces of colored paper and a nail with the instructions that if God had shown us anything that weekend that we needed to surrender, we could nail it to the Cross. I cried as I realized I had to let go of my dream, and that even though I did not understand, I could trust that God's plans were better for me. One by one, we nailed our 'surrender' to the cross. I felt a peace as I let go. And as I looked at the Cross, I realized that all of our surrendered dreams at the Cross were actually quite beautiful--kind of a pretty mosaic. And then I realized that while the enemy could not have our souls he was doing everything he could do to defeat us. My unfulfilled dream has caused me pain and resentment towards God; I had struggled to hold onto Hope.

I realized that day that there is so very much beauty in the Cross. The enemy tried the same strategy with Jesus. He meant for the cross to be a place of defeat, scorn, and shame for Christ. But our Lord defeated death and the enemy. This Christmas season, I am celebrating the birth of Jesus. He came to be the penalty for our sins, to free us from the pain of unfulfilled desires, to fill us with His hope, love, and joy. Because of the gift and power of the Holy Spirit, we can defeat the enemy too! What a beautiful Gift we have in Jesus!

The irony of all of this is that after I let go of my dream almost two years ago, and accepted God's will for me...He has begun to fulfill my dream. In a way more beautiful that I could have ever imagined! I think He delights in providing wonderful gifts for us, if we just trust Him.

Immanuel

"Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and will call Him Immanuel." (Isaiah 7:14 NIV)

"All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call Him Immanuel"–which means God with Us." (Matthew 1:22-23 NIV)

The OT told of Christ's coming. The NT is prophesy fulfilled. Immanuel, God with us, confirms it in my life. This has been a special year for me as I have learned more about God. And myself. I've grown in intimacy with Him by inviting Him to be more a part of each day. Daily I seek His wisdom. I surrender my will and ask God for a blueprint for my day. God has always been with me. This year, I had an opportunity to enjoy Him more by inviting Him to be a have a more active part in my life. And I'm more aware. Of Him. His work. His guidance. His love. And His blessings! For this reason alone, even though 2006 was a year of loss for me in many ways, it has also been a special year because God is with me. And with you, too!

A Christmas Gift for Jesus

Has anyone ever forgotten your birthday? I was born on Thanksgiving Day. For those born on or near a holiday, it’s a common occurrence to have your special day lost in the shuffle of the busyness. Or maybe a loved one forgot an anniversary or cause for celebration that was important to you. Being forgotten, or remembered as ‘an after thought’ can make one sad. I wonder if it makes Jesus sad to see the ones He loves so much, scurrying about preoccupied with so many things other than fellowship with, and service to, Him.

Two scriptures speak of the magnitude of the gift God gave us in Jesus. “The virgin will be with child and will give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means ‘God with us,” (Matthew 1:23). And, “For God so loved the world (you and me) that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him, shall not perish, but have eternal life,” (John 3:16). Jesus, the gift God gave to us, His much loved children, came to be with us forever; and to be our Lord and our Savior. That is the single greatest gift we can ever receive. So, why is it, during the holidays, we need the reminder “remember Jesus is the reason for the Season.” We let ourselves get so busy and stressed out, we have little time to spend in fellowship, prayer, and praise with Christ? And sometimes we forget it’s His birthday.

When shopping during the holidays, many of us have that person on our list that is difficult to buy for. What do you give the Guy who not only has everything, but created everything?! Christmas is the celebration of Christ’s birth, but what can we possibly give Him that is ‘the perfect gift’?!

Jesus tells us Himself, “For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger, and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison, and you came to visit me. … I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me,” (Matthew 25:35-36, 40). We give to Christ when we give to others. So this Christmas season, and throughout the year, dedicate yourself to giving. Afterall, God blesses us continuously. There are so many opportunities to give to Jesus by serving others! Ask God to show you how you can better serve your family and friends. How can you impact your community for Jesus’ glory? Do you know a person or family struggling just to have the basics like food, electricity and shelter? Give them a card with a giftcard to lighten their load. Buy a few extra non-perishables on sale each week and donate to a local food pantry. Do you have limited financial resources? Clean out your closets donating items much needed by people with so much less. Spend time with someone who is lonely and possibly forgotten by others. Organize a blood drive in your community or at work. Ask God to fill your heart to overflow for His people, to let His grace and mercy flow through you to reach the lost and hurting in your community of influence.

“A gift opens the way for the giver and ushers him into the presence of the great,” (Proverbs 18:16). What will be your gift to Jesus?

Words

That's a saying we learn as children to toughen us up to handle the taunts of other children. When we're young, words sting and hurt. When we're adults, words sting and hurt. Words are powerful, they can build us up with encouragement, or crush our spirit. I think Proverbs 12:18 sums it up best,

"Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing."

Meaning

"Meaningless! Meaningless! Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless."

Sounds like the ramblings of a despondent and hopeless person. Yet these are the words of one of the wisest men recorded in the Bible...Solomon, son of King David. In Ecclesiastes, Solomon says everything is meaningless, pleasure, wisdom, toil, and more. I thought of his words when I read a scripture in my daily devotional today: "You are just a vapor that appears for a little while then vanishes away." (James 4:14).

Although we may live 60 years or more in this lifetime, compared to eternity, our life is just a vapor. So, why do we worry so much about things that seem so important? And work so hard to achieve things like status and wealth that we leave behind when we die? Solomon's point is that sometimes our focus is on things that are really not all that important. The things that truly matter are the ones that have everlasting value. While a nice dinner out can be fantastic, does it have everlasting value if I do nothing for my neighbor who is hungry? I believe God gives us opportunities all around us to reach out and put meaning into our life. The Christmas season is an especially important time to think of others, but I think God would like us to reach out to others throughout the year as well. Solomon's message, "Everything-apart from God-is meaningless" is a timely reminder this Christmas season to remember to slow down and focus. Everything doesn't have to be perfect for it to be a special season. Enjoy the meaning of life, and celebrate the life of Jesus. Expressing faith through our love for others.

Mary and Joseph...

Sometimes relationships can be very hard. But there is a key component that can make even the most difficult of situations so much easier. And that is living life with the single focus of growing in relationship with Jesus. When we seek to live a life that honors God, and we ask for His wisdom and guidance in making our decisions, we tend to make right decisions, and our life reflects the fruit of our relationship with Him. The story of Mary and Joseph’s love and marriage reflects the integrity two individuals brought to a romantic relationship.

In Luke 1:28, an angel appears to Mary and tells her she has found favor with God. Whenever I read that God ‘found favor’ with someone in the Bible, I pause. What is it about a person that causes God to find favor? Surely it must be a surrendered heart willing to love, honor, and trust God in, and for, all things. When the angel appeared to Mary, she was engaged to marry Joseph. Instead of worrying about what her pregnancy might mean in her relationship with him, she eagerly accepted God’s call on her life. Mary said “I am the Lord’s servant. May it be to me as you have said,” (Luke 1:38). “My soul glorifies the Lord and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,” (Luke 1:46-47). That is uncompromising, selfless devotion to God; the kind of devotion that develops through a consistent, intimate relationship with God over time. And one that is so important to have when entering into a relationship.

When Mary tells Joseph the news of her pregnancy, she has returned from visiting her relative Elizabeth for about three months. It’s possible that Joseph thought Mary had been unfaithful to him; can you imagine the range of feelings he must have felt? Pain, betrayal, confusion? Customary for the time, breaking an engagement was similar to today’s divorce. It was a man’s right to put away his fiance, even with public disgrace and/or having her stoned to death. But Matthew 1:19 tells us Joseph was a righteous man who did not want to publicly disgrace Mary, so he planned to break the engagement quietly, and in doing so, offered her compassion, mercy, and grace. (Why is it when people break up today, they sometimes want to get revenge, hurt, and or humiliate the one they used to love?) An angel then appeared to Joseph in a dream and confirmed what Mary had told him. The angel told him not to fear taking Mary to be his wife. I like this reminder not to be afraid when God asks us to do something that may not make sense or may take us out of our comfort zone. There is peace in being in God’s perfect plan and will for our lives. Scripture also teaches that Joseph was not to have sexual relations with his wife until after the birth of Christ. I think that speaks to us that serving God sometimes requires sacrifice and discipline, but there is beauty in doing so. In Joseph’s obedience to God, he married Mary, giving her the love and protection of a husband, and for Jesus, the dignity of an earthly father. He cared for Mary tenderly as she gave birth to Jesus.

As singles, Mary found favor with God and Joseph lived as a righteous man. These two began a marriage relationship with the proper foundation; they both sought to live life in a way that honors God first. As a result, they were able to lovingly understand and support one another, even if it seemed difficult. This is the kind of relationship that God offers each of us. He wants intimate fellowship with, and devotion from, us. When our desire becomes Him, He places desires in our heart that He delights in fulfilling. His love, compassion, and grace can flow through us, if we allow, and may impact others in a significant way.

A Life to Enjoy

I received an email and it had this line in it:

"I asked God for all things that I might enjoy life.
God said, No. I will give you life, so that you may enjoy all things."

Even though God asks us to surrender our lives and serve Him, I think He still smiles when we enjoy and appreciate the blessings He gives us. As long as we don't put our passions before Him, I believe He gives us love, beauty and joy in people, nature, and things to help us enjoy life.

When Pigs Smile

Love Transforms Everything

I saw a Christmas sale promotion sign that reads "Love Transforms Everything." And it's true. Whether given from a friend, family member, or even our pets, love can change a dreary day to one of hope and joy so easily.

Love taken away also transforms things. I have a friend who was pursued and romanced with passion by a guy. He made many declarations of a future, commitment and authenticity. She believed in him and fell in love. But it seems his love was conditional. Now, she is left with only brokenness. A broken heart. And the emptiness that comes from the loss of someone believed to be a friend. Sadly, this is such a common story. I know I've experienced it several times in my life. People make heartfelt promises of love and commitment. But somewhere, there are unspoken conditions. I promise to love you forever (if)...

But God's love is different. He doesn't love us less if we fail Him. He doesn't withdraw His love from us if He sees something in us He doesn't like. He simply loves us because He is love. His love for us is unquenchable, so great, He sent His Son to die that we might have eternal life. Galatians 5:6 tells us we express our faith when we love. As we learn to love others more, it transforms us. We become more patient with others, more caring, and willing to extend grace to others when they disappoint us. As we change, we become more like Jesus as we see the world through God's eyes.

Yes, God's unconditional love definitely transforms everything!

A Lost Chapter

Some of my friends commented upon reading yesterday's post that they had not heard the 'dog mirrors God' reference before, so I wanted to share what is called "A Lost Chapter in the Book of Genesis: Where Dogs Come From..."

I can't take credit for this story, but unfortunately, I can't give credit to the rightful owner, it's one of the great stories that has been in circulation for a while.

Adam was walking in the garden and cried out to God, "You used to walk with me every day. Now I do not see you anymore. I am lonely here, and it is difficult for me to remember how much you love me."

And God said, "I will create a companion for you that will be with you forever and who will be a reflection of my love for you, so that you will love me even when you cannot see me. Regardless of how selfish or childish or unlovable you may be, this new companion will accept you as you are and will love you as I do, in spite of yourself."

And God created a new animal to be a companion for Adam. And it was a good animal. And God was pleased. And the new animal was pleased to be with Adam and it wagged its tail. And Adam said, "Lord, I have already named all the animals in the kingdom and I cannot think of a name for this new animal."

And God said, "Because I have created this new animal to be a reflection of my love for you, his name will be a reflection of my own name, and you will call him DOG."

And DOG lived with Adam and was a companion to him and loved him. And Adam was comforted. And God was pleased. And DOG was content and wagged his tail.

After a while, it came to pass that Adam's guardian angel came to the Lord and said, "Lord, Adam has become filled with pride. He struts and preens like a peacock and he believes he is worthy of adoration. DOG has indeed taught him that he is loved, but perhaps too well."

And the Lord said, "I will create for him a companion who will be with him forever and who will see him as he is. The companion will remind him of his limitations, so he will know that he is not always worthy of adoration."

And God created CAT to be a companion to Adam. And Cat would not obey Adam. And when Adam gazed into Cat's eyes, he was reminded that he was not the supreme being. And Adam learned humility. And God was pleased. And Adam was greatly improved. And DOG was happy.

... And Cat didn't give a care one way or the other.

My Maggie Mae

My beagle turned 14 yesterday. We celebrated all day with extra loving hugs, kind words, and doggie treats. I've had her since she was a puppy, just a few weeks old. And we've had such a special bond since the first nite I got her.

I've learned a lot about unconditional love from her. Regardless of the late nights I worked and kept her waiting for dinner, she always greeted me enthusiastically with complete forgiveness. She finds joy in such simple pleasures. Going to the mailbox with me, on an errand in the car, or when company arrives. She lets everyone know how happy she is. When she hurts or becomes sick, she draws near to me for protection. She reminds me of my relationship with God. Whenever I hit a rough spot, I draw near Him for protection and care. I think it possible that God created dogs to teach us unconditional love, because it sure does not come naturally for us. It's been said their name 'dog' mirrors God, because He created them to mirror His love to us. She's taught me to be less selfish, which is a good thing. And I really love taking her for a walk and watching her interact with nature as she sniffs out new adventures.

Some times I'm glad she can't talk. She has experienced a lot with me and has a lot of great blackmail material! At sad times in my life, she has come to my side and lay quietly while I wept. Dogs are naturally man's best friend.

When she was 4.5 years old, she became epileptic. At 6 years, she had a ruptured disc in her back. Some people have thought me goofy because I took her to a vet that could help her heal. After her surgery, she kept me from stepping on a water moccasin. And then another. And another! They were all on our patio, just outside the door. I always felt like God let me save her, so she could save me!

I love my little dog very much and I count her among the many blessings in my life!
